UPC - Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Barcelona Tech, a public institution for higher education and technology, is one of biggest Universities in Spain, with more than 38.000 students, 42 departments and 61 research centers. The MCIA Research Group develops its activity at the UPC. MCIA Group was established in January of 1998 in Terrassa, Spain. Nowadays, the Group has been recognized as a Consolidated Research Group and a member of the Technology and Innovation Network of the local Government of Catalonia. Its research activity is focused on the areas of industrial electronics, industrial control and process diagnosis, power electronics design and control, and energy efficiency and monitoring. The Group has achieved numerous international publications as a result of its research activity. The MCIA Group strives to achieve excellence in research by means of leadership and cooperation in research programs funded by European and Spanish institutions on a competitive basis. Moreover, technology transfer is ensured by agreements and contracts with industry or by the participation in Research Consortiums, and by means of specific services provided from its full-equipped laboratories.

The specific working lines of the Centre are:
• Industrial Electronics and Control. Evolution towards intelligent supervision and quality control.
• Communications and industrial systems integration. Electronic Equipment & Communications Networks
• Power Electronics. R&D towards power converters and algorithms for control and energy regeneration
• Energy management. Evolution towards energy efficiency and distributed energy optimization systems.

Specific areas of research in the process control field
• Research and innovation for the management of the energetic demand in industrial processes.
• Monitoring, supervision and control of industrial processes
• Integral use of energy and integration of distributed generation systems.
• Design and development of nonlinear controls
• Improvement of the efficiency of components and systems including predictive maintenance
